What if Castro really is dead?

Sat Aug 25, 2007 at 09:50:50 AM PDT

If Castro dies, what happens?
This is an old question with a variety of vague answers.

In Cuba, its likely that Raul, Fidel’s brother, takes over. He’s a spry....75? Even if Raul maintains "business as usual", we’re talking...what...ten more years? When the Castros are gone, what happens?

Max Weber and the Charismatic Authority

Sat Apr 07, 2007 at 04:29:49 PM PDT

I’ve been meaning to start two series of diaries on here for quite some time. The one I havnt started yet will be a series of book reviews and recommendations because the anthropology and sociology in the liberal blog-o-sphere is..well, its weak. And I mean cultural anthropology, not the human evolution kind. All y’all need to read Eric Wolf, Frances Fox Piven, David Harvey and a host of others.

So consider this the 1st instalment of my other desired series: A review of the theories and ideas from those who came long before us. Let us not reinvent the wheel when all we really need to do is read Capital or Max Weber.

So...the  first instalment of DWM’s and their ideas of quality: Max Weber and the Charismatic Authority

Why Aren't We Talking About NAFTA?

Tue May 16, 2006 at 02:30:42 PM PDT

Why aren't we talking more about NAFTA?    Why aren't we discussing deregulation? Why have we marginalized the "push" factors of Mexican migration? Quite frankly, I think the vast majority of the debate on Mexican migration to the United States misses one its most significant points entirely: NAFTA is not a good thing. Global free trade is not a good thing. Deregulation has not been a good thing...unless you are a large multinational corporation.

Doctor Who is coming to the USA and it isn't exactly what you might think

Sun Jan 15, 2006 at 11:56:21 AM PDT

Doctor Who is coming to the United States nearly a year after the series aired in the UK. And we should pay attention. I don't say this because Im a fan of the show and want it to do well ratings wise-but of course I am and I do-rather I say this because it's a piece of popular culture that has global appeal and its not American. It is a different perspective from the United States, but its in English. In a way, it's a source for us to see how the rest of the world views....us.
